I started making quinoa years ago when it became a popular health food. Initially it never crossed my mind to research the why behind quinoa's sudden popularity. And if you were to google quinoa, there are lists of reasons why it's is a great addition to your diet.
So what it makes it my favorite super carb? It's one of the (very) few plant-based complete protein sources. What's a complete protein and why do they matter? Complete protein sources contain all 9 essential amino acids. They're considered essential because our bodies cannot synthesize them on their own. Why do amino acids matter? In short, they're considered to be the building blocks of proteins. Proteins are considered to be the building blocks of life! They contribute to the health of our skin, bones, muscles, hair, nails, and every system within us. A deficiency in these guys could impact the nervous, immune, digestive, and reproductive systems. Bottom line, making sure you're eating complete protein sources, or a combination of incomplete protein sources, to get all the essential amino acids is vital to having a healthy functioning body.
My trick to adding quinoa into my diet consistently... make one big batch at the beginning of the week. I keep a large container of it in the refrigerator to make it easy to throw in salads, to use a bowl base, and even stir into soups.
